Every choice we make carries possibility.
The Practice of Possibility
There is a word that I find myself returning to again and again.
Possibility.
It’s a simple word, yet the more I reflect on it, the more I realise how deeply it weaves its way through every part of life.
Every choice we make carries possibility.
Every path we choose to take carries possibility. Even the paths we don’t take carry possibility.
Every beginning, every ending, every door that opens, and every door that closes creates the potential for something new to emerge.
The Possibility Within Uncertainty
When we think about possibility, it’s easy to associate it with achievement or success. We often think about the possibilities that exist when we’re working towards a goal, chasing a dream, or stepping into a new chapter of life.
But over time, I’ve come to see possibility differently.
I don’t think possibility only exists in the moments we can clearly see where we’re headed. I think possibility exists just as much in the uncertainty, in the waiting, in the challenges, and in the moments where we don’t yet know what the outcome will be.
Because the truth is, we rarely know where life is leading us while we’re living it.
If I’m honest, some of the most significant changes in my own life arrived through seasons where I felt uncertain. Seasons where I wanted clarity, answers, or a clear plan, only to realise later that not knowing was part of what allowed something new to unfold.
I think there is also a certain humility in possibility. It asks us to acknowledge that we don’t have all the answers and that we cannot always predict what lies ahead. We don’t know which experiences will challenge us, which will change us, or which will become turning points in our lives. Yet there is something deeply human about continuing to take the next step anyway. To stay curious. To remain open. To trust that even when we cannot see the whole path, there is value in walking it.
A difficult season may become the catalyst for profound growth. A setback may redirect us towards something that aligns more deeply with who we are. A conversation, a decision, or a single moment can completely shift the course of our lives in ways we could never have predicted.
We often only recognise the transformation when we look back.
Perhaps this is one of the reasons possibility has become such an important word in my own life. It reminds me that life is rarely as fixed as it sometimes feels. That there is always room for growth, healing, change, and discovery. Not because every experience is easy or because every challenge arrives with a clear lesson, but because we are continually being shaped by what we move through. Possibility reminds me to stay open to what I cannot yet see and to trust that transformation can emerge in ways I may never have planned for.

What Yoga Teaches Us About Possibility
For me, this is one of the reasons yoga feels so connected to the idea of possibility.
Over the years, yoga has met me through some very different seasons of life. There have been times where I came to the mat feeling grounded and clear, and other times where I arrived carrying uncertainty, grief, stress, or self doubt. Again and again, the practice has reminded me that I don’t need to have everything figured out before I take the next breath or the next step forward.
Yoga is often viewed through the lens of physical postures, but the deeper practice teaches us something much more meaningful. It teaches us how to stay present with what is, how to meet ourselves honestly, and how to remain open to what might be possible even when we cannot yet see it clearly.
On the mat, possibility isn’t always found in achieving a new posture.
Sometimes it’s found in taking one more breath when we want to give up.
Sometimes it’s found in softening our expectations.
Sometimes it’s found in choosing rest when everything around us tells us to keep pushing.
Sometimes it’s found in the moment we realise we are capable of more than we once believed.
As a teacher, I see this often. I see students surprise themselves, and if I’m honest, I still see it in myself too. There are moments where I step onto the mat carrying stress, uncertainty, self doubt, or expectations, only to leave feeling more grounded, clear, and connected than when I arrived.
Not because they suddenly achieve something extraordinary, but because they discover something about themselves.
They discover resilience, patience, trust, confidence, acceptance, and strength.
They learn to sit with discomfort without immediately running from it. They learn that growth doesn’t always happen through force. They learn that progress isn’t always linear.
And perhaps most importantly, they begin to recognise that they are far more capable than they once thought.
Reconnecting With Ourselves
To me, these are some of the most powerful possibilities that yoga offers. Not the possibility of becoming someone else.
But the possibility of reconnecting with who we already are beneath the noise, expectations, and distractions of everyday life.
The ancient teachings of yoga remind us that change is one of the few constants in life. Everything shifts. Everything moves. Every breath begins and ends. Every season arrives and eventually passes.
When we truly embrace this understanding, we begin to see possibility everywhere.
Not because every experience is easy.
Not because every challenge has an obvious purpose.
And not because everything happens for a reason.
But because every experience offers an opportunity to learn something, feel something, heal something, or understand ourselves more deeply.
Even the experiences we would never choose can shape us.
Even the chapters we struggle through can teach us.
Even the endings we grieve can create space for new beginnings.
Remaining Open
Perhaps this is why possibility feels so important to me.
The older I get, the less interested I become in having everything figured out and the more interested I become in staying open to what life might still have to teach me.
It isn’t about having all the answers.
It isn’t about knowing exactly where you’re going.
And it certainly isn’t about forcing life to unfold in a particular way.
Instead, it’s about remaining open.
Open to growth.
Open to change.
Open to learning.
Open to healing.
Open to becoming.
Open to the idea that there may be more available to us than we can currently see.
Yoga invites us into this practice every time we step onto the mat. Every breath offers a choice. Every practice offers an opportunity to begin again. Every moment offers the chance to respond with a little more awareness, compassion, and trust.
And perhaps that’s where possibility truly lives. Not somewhere far away in a future version of ourselves.
But here.
In this breath.
In this moment.
In the simple willingness to stay open to whatever may come next.
